Adult Formation Course

for working with 3-6 year old children

St. Catherine's Episcopal Church in Marietta is hosting this training course on one Saturday a month, from 9:00am to 5:00pm beginning September 20, 2008 through August 15, 2009. This approximately 90 hour course is designed to be a spiritual formation experience and instruction. It includes at least two hours of observation in an atrium and/or a Montessori classroom in addition to the course sessions. Successful completion of the course will result in a certificate from the National Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

Tuition is $550.00 for non-members of the CGS, $500 for members. Church School Calendar for 2008-09

Amy Cook, Resource Center Coordinator and Christian Formation Specialist in the Diocese of Massachusetts and one of our National Organization of Episcopal Resource Centers Board members put together a handy calendar for your planning needs for the 08-09 school year.  It's similar to the one from the Center for the Ministry of Teaching, but this one is online and in Word so you can adapt to your own calendar needs.  Click HERE to make it your own and enjoy!  We've left some Massachusetts examples on it so be sure you clear them to avoid confusion.

Consultants

The Resource Center has begun a list of Christian education professionals who are interested in doing work in Christian formation and spirituality with parish children, youth and adult groups on a consultant basis.  We will publish here information on these consultants and ways to contact them.  Persons listed here have had experience in churches in the diocese of Atlanta.

Choosing a consultant is an important step and churches choosing to engage the work of a consultant should discern clearly the purpose for the consult and make sure that all terms are understood before any contract is made. The Resource Center and the Diocese of Atlanta cannot recommend the use of a particular consultant, however it is often beneficial to bring in an outside person in order to obtain a different perspective or to engage your staff and volunteers in a particular skill or program design.

Candy Moser: Regional Training Coordinator for Godly Play in the Southeast and an accredited Godly Play Trainer

Candy has just moved into the Atlanta area and is interested in finding out more about which churches in our diocese currently use Godly Play or are interested in learning more about it.  She is an accredited trainer and we are considering the possibility of hold our own diocesan full training (18 hours) in October if enough churches are interested.  With appropriate training, Godly Play may be used up through the third grade, although many of our parishes use it quite effectively with ages 3-6.

Candy is available to discuss more introductory two-hour or 6 hour trainings, to meet your parish's specific needs.  She is also thinking about offering "gatherings" or quarterly "get-togethers" for Godly Play users to share ideas and experiences.  If you would like to contact her, email her at clbmoser@mac.com and introduce yourself!

Choosing a Children's Bible...

An article on choosing a children's Bible appeared in Light and Peace, on the SundayPaper Blog of Gretchen Wolff Pritchard back in September of 2005 and I just found it.  It's a very interesting read so take a look at her website at www.sundaypaperblog.blogspot.com.   The "Choosing a Children's Bible" is under Previous Posts.

You will remember Gretchen as the author of the Sunday Papers used on Sunday mornings by Episcopal Churches all over, her wonderful book, Offering the Gospel to Children, and her three pageant publication Go Tell It On the Mountain, as well as Risen with Christ  for Palm Sunday/Easter programming.  Email Gretchen for a catalog of her products.

childbibleAnother Children's or Youth Bible is due out from Abingdon in September.  It's NRSV with pictures, outlines, a glossary and a lot of good ways in which to make reading the Bible more attractive to children -- even the covers are colorful.  But, it's the same text as the adult Bible.  They will be available from the Cathedral Bookstore in September.  You can contact them at cbs3@mindspring.com
